A day with a local children

I am spending one day with a local Filipino children at a church in Pamatawan, Subic Zambalez. My family and friends will provide gifts for 25 families and separate gifts will be given to about 30~35 children. We will be facilitating games for the kids, and prices will be given to the winners. We will also provide them with snacks. We will give some sports equipments to the church like badminton, soccer ball, and basketball. We will be singing and teaching songs and sports.

My personal goal in this activity is to interact with children from the local community. As a person who usually do not go closer to strangers, this would me one of my challenge during the activity. Also, since it is first time for me to teach a sports to young children, this also might be something that i have to overcome. I believe that this will also develop my leadership skills by helping children to follow my instructions.

Firstly, the local children and families of Pamatawan church in Subic will benefit from this activity because they will receive goods, school materials, and toys. Also, they will get to learn sports and some songs. I believe that i also will benefit from this activity because i might develop into a more sociable individual and i will also be more concerned about other people.

Pamatawan subic zambalez, just once, Jan 16 2011 at 4pm ~ 6pm.

My job in this activity is the head of the microphone section. Before, i used to take video of our plays but now i am the head of the microphone section and control mics. I now have two assistants who will be giving mics to the performers but i am planning to get one more to make their job easier. I have to list down all the mics that will be used on certain characters and figure how we will going to hand the mic in a short time. And my biggest role is to make sure that mics are on when the character is onstage, off when the character is off stage.

My goal is to be able to finish our play, called Annie, to be done successfully without any mistakes. Which means that mic traffics must be very clean and neat that there won't be any confusions that will lead to any mistakes and problems. Since it is my first time to do this job, i really want to make sure that i get all the concepts of how mic board works!

Well, i think our production itself will benefit from this activity because they will be able to perform in front of the audience and prove that they have put lots of effort! Also, i can benefit because i can learn some skills on controlling microphones! The audience also can benefit because they will be able to entertained by watching our play and enjoy it.

At MPH, Everyday, for about 1 month, after soccer to the performance date! (Production started earlier but i started to come everyday after soccer ISAC, before i only went once a week, on Tuesday for about two times.

diary entry for a day with local children

i went to Subic Pag-asa Christian church on Jan 16 2011 at 4pm ~ 6pm to spend a day with local children and some of their parents. Firstly, what we did was to introduce ourselves to the children. My tutor helped us to translate English into Tagalog because they could barely speak English. After introducing us, we were divided into 3 groups. I and Joseph (9th grader, Solina's brother) was in a same group and we had a small competition with jump ropes. Since i was not a type of person who can lead young children because of my patience, i had some hard time helping them to learn how to do Jump ropes but we still did a great job! after that, we had a jump rope which about 5 people are involved. Among those, 2 were holding the rope and 3 were jumping. This actually helped us and the local children to get closer and this was one of the moment where we laughed a lot. The other thing we did together was Limbo. girls did this first, but we were very impressed due to the fact that both of girls and boys were very flexible. They really did a great job on this activity! After this, we had some time to play a music. We actually were planning to teach them some songs but the environment could not support us that i played a piano. I first was pretty shy and did not know what to play but i chose to play the CCM called "still" because this is one of my favorite CCM! When i was playing it alone, my brother held the mic and stared to sing along with my music and we successfully ended it. Well, since this was also well-known CCM in English, the pastor of this church and his wife also sang this song in English and i played piano for them too. I especially was very impressed with this part because it felt that we actually had some connections and common facts that can bring us into one. Than we gave presents to children and i was very glad to see everyone playing with the toy we gave! We also took some pictures together and at the very end, one boy came up to me, said "thank you" and gave me a five. This really touched me because i felt that this small thing, or an activity can really help these children to laugh and enjoy their time. This might become the end of our activity but if i have a chance, i really would love to come to this place again and have some more interactions with these children.

Korean School Journal

2011.March.27

This week, i finally could go to Korean School after finishing my Soccer Season. Since i could not go for two weeks, i didn't know what was going on that i was a bit surprised when i found out that we were planned to do Min Sok Nol E this week. My job was to help students to play a Min Sok Nol E called Tuho. It is the game that there is a arrow like stick that we have to throw it into a high container. I was having a hard time picking up sticks in every second because kids will never stop throwing the stick even if i was not ready. My back was hurting so badly that Jinny, who was taking picture of us, asked me if i was okay. After helping out with Tuho, we played O Je mi and Chicken Fight. O je mi is very similar with Dodge ball but there are two very small balls called O je mi. I was very glad that students were very excited to play! Also, when we played Chicken Fight, students were cheering for their teammate. I really liked this because i could see that students were really enjoying it. When is was almost the end, one of the teachers told us (I, Jinny, Dongyeon, Hyun ah, and Tiffany) to also play Chicken Fight and Dongyeon won.

Korean School

In this area, there are lots of children from Korea who have moved to the Philippines when they are young. Most of them came to learn English fluently, but the problem is that they have hard time learning Korean. So our church started to open a Korean School for elementary kids, teach them how to read, write, speak our language. Also, we have math class involved. And my job is to teach them how to solve math problems and check their work.

My goal is to being able to teach children well and improve on my explanation skills. Also, i really want to help our children at school to improve on their Korean and math skills.

Firstly, our students will benefit because they will be able to learn how to use our language properly, improve on skills in Math, but also learn how to interact with friends, teachers, and parents. Also, i can benefit because i also can learn how to interact with young children and improve my skills on teacher and explaining.

Subic Korean Church, every Saturday, from 9:00 to 12:30, Feb.5 ~ maybe till my graduation, 2012 may.

Production Crew Journal #1

2011.March.24

These days, I have been working on mics traffics so that my assistants can do their job properly. We have been talking about things that need to be finished but one of my assistant did not do his work that we had a problem for couple of days.

But we could solve the problems today that we only need to start practicing handing mics to the correct performers. Since there are so many performers who need mics, some of the mics have serious traffic that i am a bit concerned about it. But i am pretty sure that as long as if we get many practices, we will be able to do it without any mistakes. I hope we can do this! <:

Also, I will be learning how to control mics. Such as how to fix the volume, how to adjust the voice, how to turn on and off the mics and also how to make sure that every mics are off. Another thing that I had to learn was to not mke the strange sound. These sounds are heard when there are too many mics on or if mics are close to each other. I heard the to fix this problem, I have to adjust the volume of the mics. I was kind of scared when I talked with max. He was having my role last year and he told me that this job is a bit hard and complicated.

I hope I can do my job well by learning it properly!

Recycling club journals

2011.Jan.27
When we first came back from vacation, our publicity members were planning to have a presentation on one of the Wendsdays to inform that we need some of supports from our school body. We needed some more volunteers that can help us to go bigger in outschool, meaning that if we have more people involved, we will be able to go to more houses in shorter time! Also, we wanted to tell our school to please segregate because they weren't doing it properly. We planned to make a powerpoint to make it easier for school body to understand how to separate recyclables properly. When we presented it at Chapel, hopefully people listened to what we said and they will now try harder to segregate properly.

2011.Feb.29
We had a little changes in our Publicity members. Don went to help ourschool and Chris came to us and tried to help us on what we are doing. We were planning to have one more presentation and help people who lives in Binictican to be more involved on giving out recyclables. One day, i and solina had to go help outschool because two of outschool member did not show up. When we went out, we found out that it was pretty a hard job because the weather was extremely hot and some of the houses were empty that we had to wait for a while and leave the house. I felt that we really need everyone to do their job.

2011.March
We still continued to work as a group. Even if our member changd a bit, I and solina worked hard together to post of some posters and labels that students and also teachers know where to throw recyclables. People started to recycle better and better. I think this kind of improvement helps us to work even harder. However, we had some problem. The labels were keep on falling! I think this was because tapes were not sticking well on the wall. Also, the posters went a bit bad because of rain and dirty stuffs. I hope we can find a way to fix those problems!

2011.April
This is almost our last month of recycling club for this school year. This is because we only have about two weeks of recycling club next month. I had a lot of fun of doing work here! Of course, I had a lot of work to do such as writing a letter for the binicican residents, having a presentation in front of a lot of students during chaple, and also making a posters and labels for the recycling bins were a bit challenging. However, we could finish all of them and we could achieve our goals. I am proud of ourselves, publicity members, and I am looking forward to finish everything and finish strong.

2011.May
This is REALLY the last month of recycling club. This month, we had a chance to giving BZMs money that we have earnedby selling recyclables. I think this was more about donating the money because they actually need those money and they will use them well. I think this is very precious and special because we actually are helping people who helps us. BZMs are the ones who clans restroom, and our whole school. However, they do not get paid a lot. So, I think giving these money to BZMs are very meaningful. I hope this ceremony? continues even if I graduate or even if I am not part of this club.
